How to Face a Telephonic Interview


Are you preparing for telephonic interview? If yes, then remember that you need to be very specific in order to make the hiring manager, to get to know you, within a few seconds.  In today’s job market telephone interviews are quite common, which are also easy for recruiters to know a candidate in just a few seconds before meeting them face to face. 1. Prepare Well: Before facing the telephone interviews, it is advisable for you to prepare well. Have full confidence in yourself; get to know your strengths, weaknesses and your potentials well before facing the telephone interview.  Likewise, it is good, if you won’t get nervous while attending the call of the hiring manager. Be cool while answering the questions.


2. Keep all the documents beside you: You should keep all kinds of credentials beside you while answering the telephone interview. Your résumé, notes or answers to tough questions should be at your fingertips so that you do not get stuck if the hiring manager asks you to provide any details of your credentials, or ask you a tough question which you were expecting from him beforehand. 


3. Rehearse and Practice: You can easily increase your chances of excelling in the interview by rehearsing and practicing in a quiet place before your designated interview time. By this you are sure to gain more confidence in yourself and can promptly answer the questions asked by the recruiter if you practice to answer the questions multiple times.


4. Note Down: It is advisable for you to note down each and everything during the course of the telephone interview. Therefore, have your pen, paper and pencil handy in order to note down each and every detail that you get to know from the interviewer. You can also note down the questions asked by him so that it can be helpful for you next time while preparing for the interview.

5. Speak in a professional way: In order to sound professional, speak with clarity and conciseness. Likewise, try to avoid fillers in your sentences like “well, um, uh,” and “and uh.” Such kind of fillers tends to annoy the interviewer. Do remember, the way you speak with the interviewer matters a lot. Because it proves how smart and professional you are.   


6. Keep your discussion relevant: To make the hiring manager easy to know you better in just a few minutes, it is very important for you to keep your conversation significant to the job target. Try to utilize each and every minute of the precious time that can prove to be advantageous in order to bag the offer. 

7. Do not eat, drink or smoke: During the interview session it is advisable for you to avoid smoking, chewing gum or food, or drinking beverages. So what if  you are not in front of the interviewer,  if the interviewer gets a little hint that you are smoking , drinking or eating,  he or she might think that you are not serious about the job that you are interviewing for and can reject you from bagging the offer.


8. Demonstrate your manners: It is advisable for you to show the hiring manager that you have good etiquettes, therefore, demonstrate your manners to him by expressing your thanks and appreciation for the interview opportunity. By revealing your manners you are sure to impress the interviewer, as it is the first priority of the interviewers to select the candidates with good conduct.

9. Summarize your credentials: Before you close the interview call, recapitulate all the qualifications in support of your application and your interest in the job. This will be easier for the interviewer to get a thorough description about you and your eagerness in the job.


10. Trace the post-interview notes and comments: After the interview it is very important for you to record each and every detail, so that the details can facilitate you in your next telephone interview, for example what went well? What, if any, areas need improvement? What did you learn? What are the next steps? Etc.
